Today, we celebrate a huge milestone. Happy Birthday to Matteo!

With the passing of one year, we have seen Matteo grow from a sometimes inconsolable yet lively newborn to a happy baby boy, who is on the threshold of taking his first steps. What a year it has been…

Today we spent the day playing, having a burrito for lunch, taking a nap followed by more play. Later in the day we met up with Christopher (after school) and Dad (after work) at Fenton’s Creamery for dinner, cake and ice cream.

Though Matteo has not grasped the whole concept of drinking milk from a sippy cup, he is drinking a few ounces. The best part is that he has not fussed much at all.

Looking back, I have no idea why we have been so nervous. When Christopher was this age, he didn’t drink much from a sippy. He handled his cold-turkey transition from bottle to sippy like a pro. I suspect Matteo will do the same.

3 days and counting…till Matteo’s first birthday!

It is 7:10 a.m. I have been awake since 5:44 a.m. Waiting.

Anticipating Matteo to wake, expecting a bottle.

Yesterday, we fed Matteo the last bottle from the last can of powdered infant formula. For the last month, we have been mixing 1/2 formula and half milk in anticipation of this day. Today, we plan to implement the switch to an all-milk sippy cup. He drinks water from a sippy all day long. We are keeping our fingers crossed.

Another haircut, another first BART ride, and what is it with the remote?

After dinner last night, we gave Matteo a haircut. Yes, we did it. We used the clippers. We were going to have our barber cut it during the last visit, but he was running a bit late; we did not have the time to wait. We think it looks better than a professional cut. What do you think?

Today, Matteo took his first BART ride into San Francisco to meet Dad for lunch. The platforms were quiet, the trains were empty, and the ride was quick.

What is it with babies/toddlers and their affinity for remotes and phones? Clearly, Matteo has the idea of what the remote does, but he cannot seem to get it to work. In time…

11 months – where did the time go?

We find it difficult to believe that 11 months has passed since we brought Matteo home. Wow. In just one month, he will celebrate his first birthday.

At this stage in his development, he crawls everywhere. Whether he crawls or cruises along the furniture, he gets around this house with the ease of an experienced traveler. We suspect that he will be walking by his first birthday.

Matteo no longer eats baby food. He eats big-boy food. By the time he reaches his first birthday, he will be done with bottles. Yay!

Here is the interesting thing…except for teeth and hair, Matteo is developing along the same timeline as Christopher did at this age. Of course Matteo was born with a full head of hair, but until recently only had two teeth. Christopher did not get a full head of hair until long after his first birthday, but he had a full set of teeth.

I decide to take Matteo to a play cafe this morning, but before leaving I wanted to put the just-washed clothes in the dryer. I set Matteo down and asked if he wanted to help, of course not expecting anything. I snapped this photo in between transferring the clothes.

Stubborn teeth

Matteo is nearly 11 months, but only has two teeth. For months now, we have been waiting for new ones. While we were eating breakfast this morning, I was able to get my fingers in his mouth to check. Looks like the new one on the bottom may break through any day. We noticed a little white bump at least a week ago. Previous to that, the lower gums were very swollen. Much to my surprise, there are at least two on top that seem to have broken through the gum line. Poor little thing…
